Cyn:

For what it's worth I like the double-rhyme aspect of "skinned" and "sin"; I'd keep it.

Incidently, while the poem is certainly true for parts of China; however, of late, many Chinese are taking dogs for pets, in keeping with their new status.  I think the Chinese Government is now opposed to canicide.  Just a note.

Dear Cyn,

Perhaps fault instead of sin ?

Love
Alan

The word sin sort of sours the serene horror of the poem, in my opinion.  It don't know how to back what I'm saying up, though, but it just doesn't work for me.  The rest of the poem is right on, though.  It evokes much sympathy for our canine counterparts...

For All the Dogs in China

On the dingy streets of Jingling
they sell our carcasses. In Beijing,
in Tianjin, we’re stolen from our homes
along with those that paced and roamed
the alleyways, afraid, alone, some skinned
before our pulse had quit. Our only sin:
that we exist - with no idea we’d come to this,
not worth a wag ... or wet-nosed kiss.
