Haven't done a sonnet for a while now, I tend to stray a little on other feet these days , but OK, I'll sit and put on sonnet shoes for a spell.

Eric,

No -- I don't think your brain had been affected!  You know my feelings about Meter and Rhythm -- it's how it sounds when READ out loud and not as it looks on paper (or read by others). I am sure readers trip on many of my IP lines because they can be flawed now and then  ~smile~ . But Shakespeare's plays were meant to be performed and not read in the privacy of our homes and libraries. Vicki and I have been to a lot of live Shakespeare these past two years (including two time with nas -- in Stratford Upon Avon in England and the NJ State Shakespeare Theatre. It is so much more relevant to hear it spoken.

I'd like to see some posts for IP critique to start out --- but I'll let YOU direct the course we take -- it is your syllabus  ~smile~

I think I can still mount a shetland pony, so, yeah -- count me in. Rene told me she really wants to become an R&M writer that all that freedom she gets in free verse has really kept her form-oriented-brain in chains  ~smile~

What's the plan? -- and thanks for jump-starting this again.

Oh...you thought I planned this?

Hey, I'm like the guy in the kitchen. asked "what the heck are you gonna do with all that left over hot sauce?"

I'm winging it.

Okay, I thought I had a direction, anyway: I figger, most people with sonnet "issues" actually have issues with meter, so I opened the thread on the trickiness of meter, thinking we could address two things in essence...the first being the fact that iambic does not have to be as hard-and-fast concrete issue as some think, and the second that the sonnet is not always as hide-bound about iambic as we may be making it seem.

I think the form is lovely...possibly one of the finest structures in poetry...but I'd like to see us focus on the poetry and remember that the form is just the package, after all.

(It may be that my brain has been affected.)

Hi.  After an extended bout of illness, both physical and mental, I've come back to give Sonnet Central another try.  Would those still interested please sign in on this thread?
