Yes, indeed - and the terror.

My work colleague used to have to check her car every day (underneath with mirrors) for a bomb, as she was married to a prominent man in the Army and the railway line which brought some pupils into school every day was bombed one morning. Thankfully, no one was hurt.

Delighted that campaign, at least is over.

Hi Ren

"and the war continues, yes?"

I am delighted to say that, I think, for the first time since 1969, I can say "No."

There is peace in Northern Ireland now. The devolved (from London) power-sharing assembly at Stormont is led by both the nationalists (broadly RC) and the Loyalists (broadly Prod.)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_Ireland_peace_process

(It is a good article, despite the Wiki editors being cautious).

p.

Good article. . .thanks for sharing!  Here's to new beginnings. . .

and an ending to the struggle and bloodshed.

Interesting, thanks Ren.

Yes I am sure he Europeans brought RC to America but St Patrick's is very likely to be Irish-linked I would imagine and, as was pined-out to me, Irish into America almost certainly meant RC - so I should have worked-out the Cathedral was RC not Prod.

I'll dig out the stained glass windows.

Unmentionables a southern thing? Yikes! We're in the south. Oh wrong south. Phew!

Yes, I see what you are saying. . .from what I gather. . .Irish immigrants post civil war brought their Catholicism to the states. . .seeking solace here from Protestant persecution in Ireland.  Which as it has been stated from a historical perspective. . .began during the time of Henry the VIII. . .and the war continues, yes?

I understand that my ex-husband's family came to America for that very reason -- as Catholics seeking safe harbor.

Ren - I meant to ask - where in New York was the cathedral?

Just a few blocks up from Rockefeller Center. . .on the other side of the street -- Fifth Avenue between fiftieth and fifty-first?  We were there the previous year (retreat 1) and returned this year on Thursday before we met you at the restaurant. . .

Did you get to Rockefeller Center?

Nas, My apologies for mentioning large reptilian beings. Did not mean to give mares of the night. As for dogs, sorry will mention those often - besides, I have it on the good authority of a close friend of mine that you were very kindly toward a dog not so long ago.

Guess that means I should keep my pics. . .in my own personal files.  *soft smile*

Ren,

Thanks. Yes, I should have realized that St Pat was St Patrick and St Patrick reflected the Irish Catholic immigration into NYC. Problem is, I think of St Patrick as Irish and Ireland as Catholic and Protestant but, as I was reminded, most Irish emigrants to NYC were RC.

I would imagine Catholicism came to America via the Spaniards first. . .and later Italian immigrants. . .though I have not researched that to be certain.

Our garden does bank a small river (a stream really but called a river) but I have never seen any of the unmentionables. A few horses, cows and so on, though (generally less threatening).

The unmentionables are a southern "thing". . .I have none in New England of course. . .but they are quite common in Florida.

Apropos stained-glass windows: I have a number of pix - if you are interested in them, I will happily post.

I love stained-glass. . .whether it be in churches or homes. . .used a lot during the Craftsman period here. . .it is lovely.  So, yes, please share. . .

The church sounds very "High Church" - these days (After Vatican II etc) the Church of England (Anglican - exists in he USA too) is ironically oft more "High Church" than many RC churches. Luther and Cromwell must be fast-rotating - like moles on speed, methinks.

I would imagine that St. Patrick's does indeed hold itself very High Church. . .however. . .I would have to say that throughout America the trend is to move away from High Church. . .keeping a semblance of the traditional and ritualistic. . .yet. . ."bending the rules" if you will with regard to such. . .thus there are guitar masses in addition to some other changes.

Ren

Prosaic -  there are some very sweet dogs around; ones who like to lay their heads in my lap and go to sleep but (apart from crocs) I'm talking pitbull, rotweiler types or huge threatening German Shepherd dogs all of which appear in my dreams like the other night when I had several clamping their jaws around my legs and arm.

Ren - I meant to ask - where in New York was the cathedral?

[ quote]The other thing this makes me think of is that crocodile again - this looks like two of his massive teeth sticking up in the city. Poor chap, he needs to gather himself together again. [/quote]

Thanks, can't get the crocodiles out of my head now.  Smaller but with sharper teeth.

Urgh, don't keep mentioning crocodiles Prosaic.  I have nightmares about them, when not dreaming about dogs attacking me.

Now that's interesting... Nas and I see the same thing, yet we do not. I would say this proves that commerce and modernity have consigned worship and spirituality to second role in society. Now, although I am not religious, I would prefer to see spirituality above commerce.

I agree. . .spirituality above commerce. . .or at least balance.  As I mentioned to Nas. . .the sun seemed to be in favor of spirituality.

The other thing this makes me think of is that crocodile again - this looks like two of his massive teeth sticking up in the city. Poor chap, he needs to gather himself together again.

Yikes --- a crocodile again. . .I actually have some alligator photos from when we lived in Florida. . .will have to dig those out. . .they would literally spread themselves on your back yard if you backed up to a lake or pond. . .

I am planning on cropping out a window of this pic at some point, sooner rather than later I hope. . .that I love.

What denomination is this, Ren, please?

Catholic. . .with many, many banks of votives inside.
