Septoling Sampler for September's FOM

I. Cloudbusting

Papier mache clouds with print---
these wild mobiles spin,
nightly. I'll
sit,

sharpen sticks and swing,
until each word bursts into daylight:
cloudbusting

II. Bruising

From our carriage seat, you glare
white horses spin, swell.
The street roars;
groups

point, giggling parrots---
your gift bags, flung, hit my head,
bruising.

III. Hunting

The bars release their patrons;
I squat to clutch this
white rabbit,
caught

by men and dogs, tied
to your circling whims. You're out,
hunting.

IV. Waiting

The night rubs upon orange-lipped
street lamps that wink on;
children scatter
home

to their carousels
of uncounted sheep, no longer
waiting.

Hey Tim...

I'm hearing you ask two, rather than one question, so I'm not sure which you mean.

1) Norm's rule is that the last word of the poem becomes the title.

2) That last word must be a present participle (used as a noun = gerund)

I hope that answers the question.

deLighting in your interest, Daniel 8)

de Lighting

Often I'm not very clear
so please always ask
when my words
cloud

I want to impart
knowledge that encourages
deLighting

Hello Daniel,

I was wonder-ing: is the gerund necessarily repeated from title to last line or can any -ing word work? Thanks for putting up this FOM, I need a challenge.

Gerund missing in ours, Lady Grace!

I hope I have the form correct!

VISIONS

Agonizing over time
leaves dreams in despair.
For hope lies
dead

when truth is buried
below the world's entrapping
visions.
[ note the missing gerund Embarrassed ]

You wonderfully capture the essence of both the form and the reality of vision-entrapment!

deLightingly, Daniel  8)

Mercy

emerging out of the blue
Grace can be like that
expecting
nought

but she loves to be
with Justice and their fine friend
Mercy
[ note the missing gerund Embarrassed ]

BUT NOTE:

Both yours and my 'example' here do not qualify as septolings, since, though we do close with a single word, we do NOT have a gerund (-ing-word).

septoling ~ FOM Aug/Sept 07

Septoling is a brand new form suggested in Norm Pollack's recent postings in CA.  Though he has not named it during his experimenting with the concept in the last couple of weeks, I thought I should capture it here with that designation.  I'm assuming Norm won't mind. Grin

Like a septolet, it has seven lines, but the similarity ends there.  The poem is in two stanzas with a syllable count of 7-5-3-1 / 5-7-a single -ING-word, such that the poem looks like this:

Single -ing word

xxxxxxx
xxxxx
xxx
x

xxxxx
xxxxxxx
single -ING-word

The last single word of the poem becomes the Title
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
...and it is a gerund (present participle) of any number of syllables.
Norm's first posts in this form:
hibernating
sleep within the folds of air
but do not disturb
the flow of
dreams
i have memories
imbedded with DNA
hibernating
presaging
the winds of our history
cannot blow away
conscience like
sand
civilizations
tell us that "is" becomes "was"
presaging
© Norman S. Pollack
and my own first attempt:
minimalizing
so much wears away with time
but there's more than rhyme
with poets'
terse
appreciation
honestly grows when you stop
minimalizing
